Adif and SICE Tecnología y Sistemas reach partnership agreement to develop RDI activities
The two organisations combine their technical and technological capacities to develop projects on energy efficiency, information and mobility systems for railway stations, and the development of an ERTMS signal system.
October 18, 2011 // Malaga (Spain)
Adif’s chairman, Antonio González Marín, and Juan Enrique Ruiz González, CEO of SICE Tecnología y Sistemas, have signed a partnership framework agreement to work together on activities related to research, technological development and innovation at Adif’s Railway Technology Centre (CTF) in Malaga. The agreement covers information systems and systems integration at stations, solutions to optimise energy consumption at stations and user mobility, and also the development and official approval of ERTMS for conventional lines at the CTF’s special laboratories.

To achieve this, Adif is making space at the CTF available to SICE Tecnología y Sistemas, as well as testing and experimentation facilities in Antequera. Its launch will benefit the whole area and attract firms to Andalusia, serving as the basis for the development of the region’s economic, social and productive fabric.

This new infrastructure will mobilise over €400 million euros in investment, positioning Spain at the world forefront in railway technology and contributing towards strengthening the international competitiveness of a key sector in the country’s economy. Adif has recently invested over €9.5 million at the laboratory and Workshops facilities of the Integrated Railway Services Centre in Bobadilla.

Research areas

The joint research areas are the development of information and integration systems at stations, mobility control and improved use and user accessibility at stations, and the development and approval of an ERTMS solution for conventional lines at the CTF’s specialised laboratories.

The framework agreement between Adif and SICE Tecnología y Sistemas will also allow other common interests in the railways field to be pursued, such as carrying out studies and research projects and programmes, development and innovation in scientific areas, reciprocal consulting, mutual support and the exchange of information on scientific development and monitoring issues, cooperation in staff-training programmes, organisation and implementation of joint activities related to the social promotion of technological research and development, personnel exchanges and collaboration, and the shared use of facilities.

The two entities have also made the commitment to work together on setting up public–private consortia to submit RDI projects for national and EU-wide calls for proposals or joint bids in international tender processes, as well as any other matters considered to be of mutual interest.

Malaga Railway Technologies Centre

Adif, which has been committed to technological innovation and development since it was first set up, has 48 RDI projects currently being implemented and 6 more projects recently approved in the INNPACTO 2011 call, all in partnership with other organisations, representing a total investment of €118 million, besides its existing partnerships with over 100 Spanish companies, 24 technology centres and 26 universities.

The centre has been conceived as an open space to encourage innovation and business partnerships focusing on railway-related technological development through RDI projects. It has currently secured the partnership and presence of cutting-edge technology firms as well as SICE Tecnología y Sistemas.

Adif is therefore achieving one of its strategic objectives: to increase cooperation with public and private entities in research, development and technological innovation within its priority areas of business, as well as RDI projects promoted by Spanish public authorities and the European Union through the RDI Framework Programme.
